PETAT CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL - A short story

Thomas Echinacea was a thirteen-year-old, form one student. He walked into his school, on this bright morning, at about seven-ten a.m. He was neatly dressed in his school uniform, which was clean enough, but which was dotted with numerous patches both on his shirt and on his trousers. The few books he had were in the yellow cellophane bag he was carrying. He kept his writing materials in his pocket because he couldnt afford for them to be stolen.

His parents were very poor and would not be able to afford another set. On his feet, he wore bathroom slippers.

In Petat Central High school, it was an offence to wear anything other than brown sandals to school. Two days before, Thomas sandals, which usually visited the shoemaker once or twice every week, became damaged beyond repair.

He didnt realise how bad things were, until all the shoe-repairers he took them to, told him firmly one after the other, that they could not help him any longer. He had begged his father to buy him another pair, but the man sadly told him that he couldnt afford it now and asked for more time.

THE MARINA Short Story

Marina
It was seven a.m. and Peter Anadre relaxed in the owners corner of his new BMW X5 Jeep. He loved this car, particularly for its tasteful interior, its comfort and its excellent engine performance. To him it was truly the ultimate driving machine. However, he hardly drove the car these days; the more he climbed the ladder of success, the more he had to depend on Usman, his chauffeur, for his travels. Most often he made use of the few hours in the car to study reports and memos, to catch up on some reading or to meditate in preparation for major decisions that he would have to make during the day. The pressure of his work on his thoughts was not so stifling this morning and so he decided to browse through the days paper to keep him abreast of developments around the globe.

The traffic was bad as usual. He realised that they had been at a standstill for a few minutes, and looked up. The car was on the outer lane of the road and he had a clear view of the few ships docked along the Marina. They were giant vessels but looked forgotten and derelict. He wondered if they were really safe to ply the waters.

Something else caught his attention.

Another book

I started writing a new book last week and the feeling was euphoric. Just one page, that is all i was able to do but at least it was a beginning.

TAILED

By very popular demand, I decided to do a reprint of my first novel Tailed. It was first printed in 1999 and has been out of circulation.

I got the first batch during the Book fair and I must say that the book designer and printer did an excellent job. To everyone who has seen it, it is international quality. There is a sample chapter on this website under the BOOKS page with the link reproduced below.

TAILED

Copies are now being distributed to the bookshops. I would like to hear from you as soon as youve read it.

The online version should be ready in the next 30 days for readers who live outside the country. I will surely keep you posted.

The Nigerian International Book Fair

It took place last week from the 7th -12th May at the Unilag Multipurpose hall and was a great experience. The turnout was fair, it would have been better if the students were not on forced leave. There were visitors and participants from all over the country, south Africa, Norway to mention a few.

All the participant including my goodself had the benefit of a little bit more exposure. Above is one of the pictures from my stand.

Battlefield of the Mind by Joyce Meyer

There is a battle ever raging in our minds; a struggle between what is good and what is not good. Some days are full or arguments as the voices within work towards getting our attention and buying us over.

How often do we do things and later wish we hadnt?

We say something and wish we could take it back.

Sometimes our failings are not so spontaneous. We forget ourselves and obey a stronger voice that herds us on to do carefully planned regretful evil.

The Aireginan Dream Public Presentation

I had been looking forward to this presentation for a long time and finally the day came. I had a great time. Usually I don't like being the centre of attention but i coped very well. Elder Wigwe (Former Director General of NTA- Nigerian Television Authority) chaired the occasion and gave us snipets of wisdom on the need for a new Nigeria. Kunle Ajibade of 'The News' Fame; Kola Ayeye former Managing Director of National Bank; Pastor Sam Adeyemi - ably represented by Ayo Daniels; Femi Obaweya and Pastor Peter Egho, took turns to review the book. I was quite pleased to hear that for each one of them, the book was a page turner

The message was the same. First any change in Nigeria will start with you. Secondly, if we fold our arms and do nothing, then the status quo of poverty, corruption etc will remain. I was glad to hear many of the guests pledge to make their contribution to the renewal we all desire.

What else?

The Aireginan Dream - Public Presentation

Finally and by the special grace of God, my second book "The Aireginan Dream" will be presented to the public on Sunday 10th September.

I feel a bit overwhelmed by the magnitude of what is being planned. But through the years i have learnt to depend on God when i see major challenges ahead. So in my heart, i know it will be a grand occassion.

I look forward to the pleasure of welcoming you there. The venue is Muson centre, Lagos Island - 3pm. prompt; not Nigerian time. God bless you.
